For what this is, it is a good gym; with a little extra design effort it could be a great one. I am 6’3 and I wish it were just a little bigger – I find that I am always just a little short of a full range of motion. I wish I could reach just a little higher for the lat pulldowns. The handles for the chest press are fine for the press, but their positioning make it impossible to do flys without removing them entirely. The screws are a kind of non-standard size – I’ve looked around for the metric threading with a butterfly end but haven’t been able to find them for less than $4 or $5 each. It would be nice if these handles had thumbscrews or knobs on them to facilitate the quick release/reattachment. As it is, I have to keep an allen wrench handy until I find the right screws.

There is a removable angled armrest for “preacher bar curls”. I’d love to see one that is fully vertical – with that I could put a chair in front of it facing the weight stack, rest my chest on it, and be able to use the chest press handles for horizontal rows.

Overall, though, for the money it is very good. All the parts were there and well labeled – the only damage was the “MARCY” decal on the front, which doesn’t matter to me. It went together very easily – I highly recommend a socket wrench and a screwgun with an allen-key (the directions recommend an adjustable wrench – the allen keys are provided). It took me only a few hours to assemble working with a friend.

If you are smaller than me you’ll have no problem with the lat pulldowns; but unless you’re quite thin I would expect that you’ll have problems with the flys.

EDIT – In case anyone has the same difficulty as I did with the chest-press handles making the flys impossible – I took the mounting bolts for the chest-press handles off; determined that they were a metric M10 x 1.5 thread size; the bolt length is 15 mm. I searched for this and found something similar on Amazon offered through JW Winco. I went to the J.W. Winco site ([…]) and found the EXACT bolt I needed with a nice knob on the end (see pics). Their part number is 10N20E09/ST.

Just in case there is a variation in bolt, I recommend taking a bolt down to your local hardware store where they’ll have a display of nuts – you just find the nut that your bolt fits and you’ll know the thread size.

It only takes a few minutes to unscrew all four bolts by hand to remove the handles, then I have no problem with the flys.

I’m very happy with this product. I’d like to address some of the negative observations in previous reviews. This Home Gym is packaged in 3 cartons, shrink-wrapped and strapped to a pallet – so none of the cartons were torn or dented; all parts were accounted for. Amazon schedules a delivery at the time of purchase to ensure proper handling to your home. The Assembly instructions consist of fairly clear line drawings of the parts, each of which is numbered. There are no written, verbal directions for assembly. For example: It would have helped for the instructions to tell you to thread the cables through the pullys as you assemble them. Also, the drawings for the bully set-up should have been blown up to show greater detail. That said, If you take your time, you will figure it out. For the most part, assembly went very smoothy, my wife and I completed the job in approx. 3 hours. While this is a smaller / less bulky Home gym – It is solid and sturdy. It is a little tight for my shoulders when doing Chest Press but is something I can get used to. I would recommend this to someone looking to tone up basic muscle groups without committing a lot of money and space to the process. This is a very good value for the dollar.

You can do a lot with this machine, but it can be a little fiddly to set up. It took so long, I regretted not convincing my roommate we could just do You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises or Convict Conditioning: How to Bust Free of All Weakness-Using the Lost Secrets of Supreme Survival Strength instead. But staying with it was worth it. It’s a nice home gym.

First potential issue. Pay attention to when it says tighten and when it says not to. When you put on the central pole (step 2 or 3) you don’t tighten it. If you do, step 4 will be impossible. Step 4 may look impossible anyway, because the rear poles will be too low. You have to pull the middle pole forward with one hand, push the rear poles back with another hand, line up the top bar with a third hand, and set up the screws with a fourth. Yeah, it’s a good idea to have two people for this stage. And yes, there is a stage where a pully looks like it’s just hanging down connected to pretty much nothing. Go with that for the moment. Also, don’t make anything too tight.

They give you exactly the number of screws, nuts, and washers you need and not a single screw more. Don’t lose one.

You will need a pair of adjustable wrenches. They are not included.

The lateral bar is on what for me seems like too long a chain (even my roommate at 5′ tall found it too long) so I would suggest shortening it with the simple expedient of connecting to a lower link. You can always let it back out if you need. You’re going to move that bar around from the top to the bottom. There is only one bar provided for both. You will need to use the same carabiner for the bar and for the ankle cuff. I may pick up a spare for convenience sake, but it isn’t strictly needed.

There is a child safety lock provided, which I thought was a nice idea.

In use, it provides me enough flexibility I’m happy with it. It provides a chart of how to do each exercise and what each exercise works. I love the lateral pull downs (a good exercise to work up to chin-ups) and that machine always has a line at the gym. No long line for a machine in my living room.

It is small enough I was able to sequester it to a discrete corner of the living room, which is important for an apartment dweller, and it looks fine there. It is large enough to work out on comfortably, but here I’ll give the caveat, it’s being used by two relatively small women. I don’t know if a fairly tall man will find the unit large enough. It might be fine; I just don’t know and would be concerned.

There are a lot of options, but most involve using the same thing in different ways (pulling the lat bar behind you, standing and facing the lat bar, puling the lat bar to your chest, etc, etc) so I’ll just describe what moves in what way.

You have an overhead lat bar. You can pull it down.
You have two grips. You can insert a pin and move them forward. You can remove the pin for butterfly presses.
You have a leg bar that you can move up.
You have a ring at the bottom that can be connected to an included ankle cuff or the lat bar. You can pull it away from the bottom front center of the machine.

Within that, you have a lot of options, and you will be able to hit every muscle group.
