Great backpack! It’s better than “basic” but it’s also not for 17″ laptops, either!, March 27, 2017

This is a solid backpack with lots of room and compartments. The first compartment has several little dividers to hold your pens, post-it notes, business cards, phone, external drives, power cords, etc. The second compartment is not as deep or wide as the other pockets but goes down the whole length of the backpack. The third compartment is h-u-g-e! It’s deep and wide and about 3-4″ at the bottom and will hold a ton of books, folders, and notebooks. The rear compartment has a padded area for the laptop, a shallow pocket and another huge area that’s as big as the 3rd compartment. Finally, in between the 3rd and 4th compartments is a mini-pocket that can hold a phone, iPod, ear buds, and other small items. This thing can hold a lot! On each side of the backpack is a mesh pocket with elastic top. It will hold a 20 oz. bottle of water. Drink containers larger than a 20 oz. water bottle will probably not fit. Now, let’s talk about padding. The front compartment is padded, the handle is padded, the shoulder straps are very well padded and the areas that will be pressing against your shoulder blades and lower back are thickly padded, too.

Overall, this is a great backpack and not too “basic”. It’s lightweight and strong. However, I have a 17″ laptop (screen size). When I actually measured the body, it is 16 1/2″. It can barely fit into the backpack without a lot of effort. And at the very top of the bag, where the corners of the laptop are, the laptop is clearly pushing the limits of the fabric so now those areas of my laptop are at risk for damage if dropped and the bag probably won’t last more than a year before those areas completely wear through. And that is why I had to give this a 4-star rating. 🙁

If you have a 15″ laptop and a lot of gear to carry, then this backpack is great and would be worth all 5 stars!!!

Budget-friendly option, offers minimal laptop protection – UPDATE 8/5/14 : Bottom ripped with light use, October 23, 2013

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)

The AmazonBasics Laptop Backpack (AB 103) is a budget priced 15″ laptop backpack, which provides ample storage, but lacks up-to-date media pocket and adequate protective padding for most laptops. For the price, this basic laptop has a lot of storage, and will get the job done. However,it may not please someone who is concerned about protecting their laptop and wants a more expensive ‘feel’ to their laptop backpack.

In my video review I try to show you the features of this laptop backpack to help you make a good decision as to whether or not the features and price outweigh the shortcomings of this backpack.

Things I like about this laptop backpack…

+ Economical retail price makes it a good choice for those on tight budgets.
    + Lots of interior pockets!
    + Handle on the top.
+ Fits up to a 15″ ‘thick’ laptop as well as ultrabooks.
+ (2) mesh pockets on the exterior for water bottles.
+ (1) interior pocket that looks ideal for a short umbrella.
+ Side cinch-latch system for making the backpack’s depth greater or smaller.
    + Padded backrest and straps.

    What I wish was better…

    – Laptop compartment is too lightly padded.
    – The back of the laptop backpack is padded, but the cardboard behind it bends and is right next to the laptop compartment inside.
    – A reinforced bottom with another layer of canvas or leather, would be good for durability.
    – The nylon that separates compartments is very thin, and feels like it could easily tear or be punctured.
    – Despite having tons of pockets, there’s not one on the outside, front. Maybe lose the decorative stitching and add a zippered compartment?
    – No padded media pocket with headphone port.
    – Light to medium-weight canvas construction is on par with its price point, but this backpack could be improved with just a slightly heavier material choice.

**Previously I had stated that the padded bottom was something I liked about this product. Unfortunately, the bottom of this backpack ripped out after light use in less than 1 year. I want all the backpacks I use to carry laptops to be better than that, so I lowered my initial rating of 4 stars to 3 stars (It’s OK) due to this issue. 8/5/14**

Made in China for AmazonBasics, I think this backpack is OK for its price and features, but if I were purchasing one, I’d spend a smidge more and go with another option.

My favorite is the Rosewill 15.6-Inch Notebook Computer Backpack (RMBP-11001) – I personally own two of them and have given them as gifts which were well received – offers better laptop protection, plenty of storage (pockets), and has superior construction to this model, for only slightly more money.

    UPDATE: 8/5/14

I no longer have this backpack as after less than 1 year of light use, the bottom of the backpack ripped. I didn’t abuse the bag, or drag it across rough surfaces.

This backpack is a ‘budget’ backpack. My expectations were that it would safely carry a laptop and a few other items. For me, that means the bottom doesn’t rip. I want something more durable to protect expensive electronics.

I originally gave this a 4 star (I like it) rating, but lowered it to 3 stars (It’s OK), for it’s lack of durability.

this is the best “IT crash bag” I have ever owned, November 15, 2015

I must admit that I was first skeptical about a backpack for under 30 bucks that would meet the rigorous demands of an IT technologist such as myself. Well, this is the best “IT crash bag” I have ever owned. It was recently field-tested under rugged conditions, much of it in the rain, holding up quite well, and unexpectedly pulled through for me under some trying circumstances. It held all my tools I needed: multi-tool, screwdriver, crimps, diag-cutters, adapters, notepads, pens, markers, cables, 17″ laptop and charger, iPad Air, work gloves, flashlight, spare parts, etc. I hope the picture speaks for itself. I highly recommend it for field and office.

EDIT: I would like to add this is one durable backpack! Lately I have been traveling with this bag on commercial flights as checked luggage, maybe twic, since I carry so many tools for my work. Without exception, I find a TSA card inside. One time, one of the zippers had popped off track. I was bummed that I might have to purchase another bag. I went online, found a relatively easy way to repair it. SAVED MONEY and TIME. In my experience, manufacturers skimp on the zipper quality, causing it to easily crack or completely break if you try to pry at it with needle-nosed pliers or screwdriver. Not in my case! Happy customer.

I normally don’t write product reviews, only read them, but this product is so outstanding I just had to. It came a day earlier than expected, and was in impeccable condition. I opened it, and the battery was already fully charged! It booted on the first key press, setup was simple, and now I run full Office Suite, Mozilla Firefox, and several other big programs like GrandMA and MA3D for lighting. I did used a 512GB SD card on it, but either way, I don’t see why all the people complained about storage, any SD card will fix it. It charges very rapidly, and battery lasts all 8 hours of my day for me. For the price, I don’t think there’s a better entry-level laptop on Amazon for the price. Some complaine dabout updates, but this took 5 minutes to update, hasn’t bothered me since. Very happy, wish I could give 6 starts, because this would get it for sure!

So sleek and lightweight. This computer works perfectly for my needs, and you can’t beat the price. Not for gaming or storage, best used for internet access, hence the “stream” branding. If you want a gaming laptop prepare to pay 10x as much. A++ would buy again.

I bought this knowing it had limited memory space, but I didn’t need much because I didn’t plan on using it for games or downloading a bunch of programs. In fact, as soon as I got it, I went through and deleted any games or extraneous programs that came with it I had no use for. I just needed an internet and Netflix machine with a word processor. That’s it.
The day I opened the computer, I installed Chrome and Scrivener. Then I told the computer to update to the latest version of Windows. Here is where the computer failed. It refused to install the updates, and in attempting, it ate up what memory was left to the point I could not even perform a factory reset. I’ve been on the phone with Microsoft Support for three days now trying to resolve the issue. They’re doing their best (really, Microsoft Support has been excellent to work with), but there’s only so much they can do with such limited memory.
I can’t believe that anyone would design a computer that could not even run the operating system, but here it is. It does not have the internal memory to run the latest version of Windows 10. Perhaps it could run an older version, but you’d think HP would have the foresight to know Windows would release further updates. It’s a stupid design, and I was stupid for buying it. Don’t do the same.
