Til Death Do Us Part
Til Death Do Us Part – Frederick Galvanni is the thief of the century, but it’s not his first time claiming the title. For Frederick and the inhabitants of his world, reincarnation is real, but people are always reborn in the country in which they died. Now Frederick seeks to pull off his greatest heist yet—enter a maximum security prison, where souls are trapped through reincarnation, and assemble the greatest criminal team that has ever lived.

But for Frederick, the heist is just the beginning of a plan centuries in the making: a plan of revenge for unforgivable crimes committed a millennium before. And in this world, even death cannot keep Frederick from success.

I’m speechless. I just read this whole book in one sitting, and I’m really impressed. Petracci is a wonderful writer, and he outdid himself this time. The pacing of this story is amazing, not even once did I feel like he told me too much, or not enough. Petracci always gives you the right amount of detail, which leaves the reader unable to put the book down even once.

The story itself is a wonderful one. In a world where people reincarnate in the same land you die in, where do you keep criminals? The answer is as simple as it is terrifying: you keep them on a desolate island and kill them every 13 years. The result is Carcer, a prison full of inmates with bad habits, trading cookies for cigarettes. These absurd situations give the story a kind of light-heartedness which makes it very pleasant to read. However, do not let your guard down! The story gets darker and the characters more developed as you discover why the protagonist wants to get out of Carcer, and Petracci takes you with him on a journey that will not leave you untouched.

tl.dr: It’s a good book which delivers a heist-story in an interesting world.

With the tl.dr out of the way I’ll go into what this book is NOT first. This book weighs in at just over 170 pages while delivering worldbuilding, characters, plotlines and flashbacks means that not much wordcount is spent on each ingredient. Thus this book do not feature the internal world of the characters to a great extent, environmental descriptions are short and tot he point and the characters are somewhat one-dimensional. Most of the word count is used to drive the story along the main plot arc, and there are few mood setting scenes or scenes which explore the personality of the protagonists.

However, with the above taken in mind, this is a great book. The author has created an original and captivating world based on an interesting premise (when you die you are reborn in the country you died in), and manages to make it believable and pull the reader in. The word follows an internal logic and provides reasonable answers to how a world were people were continually reincarnated might work, and shows both the horror and promise of such a world. I especially liked the details on how the prison kept the prison population in check.

The plot line follows Frederick Galvanni as he breaks into a secure prison to recruit the perfect team for the perfect crime. The story is fast paced with short but suspenseful chapters. It feels like reading oceans eleven, on a grander scale. As in the movie, the characters are there to provide a function (socialite, fixer, seductress etc), but it works well in a story like this. The characters all have their quirks and have fun dialogue together.

All in all I can warmly recommend this for the young adult reader (or like myself, an older adult who likes good stories). I am looking forward to Leonards future work.

I can’t begin to express how much I not only enjoyed this book, but also every single thing I’ve had the opportunity to read by this author. I found him on Reddit’s NoSleep, where he’s published some short stories. I now own all his published works, and I can tell you that this is the one to watch. I had no doubts as to whether I’d enjoy this one; even his responses to random writing prompts (also on Reddit) astound me.

This is not a romance, despite the title. It’s about a man who was wronged in a past life in a world where every soul is reincarnated into a new body to a new family as a baby. Their memories come back gradually, and Frederick, the main character, happens to remember every life he’s ever had, despite most souls losing their memories of past lives within a few lifetimes, or cycles.

This is a story about retribution, righting a wrong. Leo has a brilliant mind and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
